It started off as a traffic stop, but escalated rapidly.

Via WWSB:

Around 10pm on Thursday, officers attempted to stop a vehicle being driven recklessly on 4th Street West, but the driver fled and crashed into a home on 600 block. The driver and passenger both took off running after the crash. Police say they managed to grab the passenger immediately but the driver, 22-year-old Avelino Misreal Vasquez-Perez of Palmetto, ran off.

WFLA:

"The house started vibrating and there was a rumble, rumble, rumble, and then a big crash. He jumped out of bed and I came from the other room and said a car just hit the house," said Terry Debaylo who lives at the home.

Miami Herald:

...police set up a perimeter around the neighborhood looking for him, Vasquez-Perez climbed a fence into Palmetto Commissioner Brian Williams’ backyard and broke into the garage of his home in an apparent attempt to hide from police.

Williams’ daughter, who lives next door, spotted Vasquez-Perez and called her dad. Williams armed himself, then heard Vasquez-Perez trying to get into the kitchen from the garage. Vasquez-Perez was then confronted by Williams at gunpoint. Vasquez-Perez attempted to push past and punch Williams, who then pushed Vasquez-Perez back and shot him twice, according to Tyler.

Fox News:

Vasquez-Perez was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover from his wounds. He faces charges of resisting arrest without violence, burglary and battery and traffic citations.

WFLA:

"Mr. Williams acted in self-defense and won't face criminal charges," police said in a statement.

"We find it was lawful, it was proper, it is self-defense. He's in his own home. He's in his kitchen. Basically, defending from someone coming in the kitchen, so he's got a right and he's got a responsibility to defend his home and his family and he did that," Tyler added.
